Frequently Asked Questions

The I Ching (Book of Changes) is one of the oldest Chinese classical texts, dating back over 3,000 years. It is a divination system based on 64 hexagrams — six-line figures composed of solid (yang) and broken (yin) lines. Each hexagram represents a specific situation or archetype with associated wisdom for guidance and reflection.
Three coins are tossed six times to build a hexagram from bottom to top. Each toss produces a line value: three heads (6) is old yin (changing), two heads and one tail (7) is young yang, one head and two tails (8) is young yin, and three tails (9) is old yang (changing). Changing lines transform into their opposite to create a relating hexagram.
Changing lines (old yin = 6, old yang = 9) are lines in transition. They carry special individual meanings and indicate that the situation described by the primary hexagram is evolving into the situation of the relating hexagram. The specific changing line texts offer additional guidance for the transformation.
