1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, remember your preferences, and provide reporting information to site owners and advertisers.

Cookies can be "session cookies" (deleted when you close your browser) or "persistent cookies" (stored on your device for a set period or until you delete them). Cookies can also be "first-party" (set by the website you're visiting) or "third-party" (set by a domain other than the one you're visiting).

In addition to cookies, this page describes our use of localStorage — a web storage mechanism built into your browser that allows websites to store data locally on your device without an expiration date.

2. What We Use

SnapUtils uses a minimal set of cookies and localStorage. We do not set any first-party cookies ourselves for tracking or authentication (no accounts exist on SnapUtils).

Cookies on SnapUtils come from two third-party services:

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — website usage analytics
  • Google AdSense — advertising to fund the free service

We also use browser localStorage for two purposes: saving your tool preferences client-side, and storing an anonymous visitor ID for our internal analytics beacon.

3. Full Cookie & Storage Inventory

Name Type Category Set By Purpose Duration
_ga Cookie Analytics Google Analytics 4 Distinguishes unique users by assigning a randomly generated number 2 years
_ga_XXXXXXXX Cookie Analytics Google Analytics 4 Used to persist session state (specific to GA4 measurement ID G-14Z44D8KNQ) 2 years
_gid Cookie Analytics Google Analytics 4 Distinguishes users; stores and updates unique value for each page visited 24 hours
_gat Cookie Analytics Google Analytics Throttles request rate to limit data collection on high traffic sites 1 minute
IDE Cookie Advertising Google AdSense (doubleclick.net) Used for targeted advertising; stores information about how the user uses the Site and any other advertising visited before 1 year
test_cookie Cookie Advertising Google AdSense (doubleclick.net) Checks if the user's browser supports cookies 15 minutes
NID Cookie Advertising Google Contains a unique ID Google uses to remember your preferences and other information such as preferred language and ads you've seen 6 months
__gads Cookie Advertising Google AdSense Linked to the ad interest categories that Google stores in the DoubleClick cookie 13 months
polsia_vid localStorage Analytics SnapUtils (first-party) Anonymous visitor UUID for internal visit counting. Never linked to personal identity. Not sent to any external party other than our analytics beacon. Persistent (browser localStorage — until cleared)
Tool preferences (various keys) localStorage Functional SnapUtils (first-party) Stores user preferences for tool settings (e.g., indent level in JSON formatter, regex flags in regex tester). Never leaves your device. Persistent (browser localStorage — until cleared)

4. Google Analytics 4 Cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 (Measurement ID: G-14Z44D8KNQ) to understand how visitors use the Site. GA4 helps us see which tools are most popular, how users navigate between pages, and what devices and browsers they use.

GA4 sets cookies (_ga, _ga_*) that contain a pseudonymous identifier allowing Google to distinguish unique visitors. This data is aggregated and used only for analytics — we cannot identify you personally from this data.

The data collected by GA4 includes:

  • Pages visited and time spent
  • Device type, operating system, and browser
  • Approximate geographic location (city/country level from IP — IP is not stored)
  • Traffic source (how you arrived at the Site)

Google's Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy

To opt out of GA4: Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on

5. Google AdSense Cookies

SnapUtils displays advertisements from Google AdSense (Publisher ID: ca-pub-8149019591930446). These ads are how we fund the free service.

Google AdSense may use cookies and similar tracking technologies to:

  • Serve personalized ads based on your browsing history and interests
  • Limit how often you see the same ad
  • Measure ad effectiveness and report click/impression data to advertisers
  • Prevent fraudulent activity

AdSense may set cookies from the doubleclick.net and google.com domains. These are third-party cookies and are controlled by Google, not by SnapUtils.

To opt out of personalized ads from Google: adssettings.google.com

6. localStorage Usage

Unlike cookies, localStorage data is not transmitted with every HTTP request — it lives entirely on your device and is only accessible to JavaScript running on our domain.

Anonymous Visitor ID (polsia_vid)

When you visit SnapUtils, a random UUID (universally unique identifier) is generated and stored in your browser's localStorage under the key polsia_vid. This ID is used to count unique visits to the Site via our analytics beacon (https://polsia.com/api/beacon/pixel). The ID is random — it does not contain your name, email, IP address, or any other personally identifying information.

Tool Preferences

Individual tools may save your settings to localStorage so they persist between visits. Examples include your last-used indent level in the JSON formatter or your regex flags in the regex tester. These are purely functional — they improve your experience and are never sent to any server.

How to Clear localStorage

To delete all localStorage data set by SnapUtils:

  • Chrome: DevTools → Application → Storage → Local Storage → snaputils.tools → Select all → Delete
  • Firefox: DevTools → Storage → Local Storage → snaputils.tools → Select all → Delete
  • Safari: Develop → Show Web Inspector → Storage → Local Storage → snaputils.tools
  • All browsers: Settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → Cookies and site data (this clears all sites)

7. Managing & Disabling Cookies

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Here's how to manage cookies in the most common browsers:

Desktop Browsers

  • Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Mozilla Firefox: Options → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Microsoft Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data
  • Apple Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Opera: Settings → Advanced → Privacy & security → Cookies

Mobile Browsers

  • Chrome (Android/iOS): Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies
  • Safari (iOS): Settings app → Safari → Block All Cookies
  • Firefox (Android): Menu → Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies

Note that blocking all cookies may affect the functionality of the Site and other websites you visit. In particular, disabling all cookies may prevent Google Analytics from tracking visits and Google AdSense from serving ads (though the tools themselves will still work fully, as they are client-side only).

8. Opt-Out Options

Google Analytics

Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on to prevent your data from being used by GA4 across all websites.

Google Advertising

Manage your Google ad preferences at adssettings.google.com. You can opt out of interest-based advertising from Google there.

Industry Opt-Out Tools

  • Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA): optout.aboutads.info
  • Network Advertising Initiative (NAI): optout.networkadvertising.org
  • European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA): youronlinechoices.eu

Do Not Track (DNT)

Some browsers include a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Our Site does not currently respond differently to DNT signals, as there is no universal standard for how websites should respond to DNT. We are monitoring developments in this area.

Global Privacy Control (GPC)

We are working to honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as required by applicable state privacy laws (including CCPA/CPRA).

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when we make changes.

We encourage you to periodically review this page to stay informed about our use of cookies.
