About Business Days
What is a business day?
A business day is any weekday (Monday through Friday) that is not a public holiday. Business days exclude Saturdays, Sundays, and officially recognized holidays. In the US, this typically means all weekdays except the 11 federal holidays (New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).
How do you count business days between two dates?
To count business days between two dates: (1) List all calendar days in the range, (2) Remove Saturdays and Sundays, (3) Remove any public holidays that fall on weekdays. The remaining days are business days. This calculator does all three steps automatically and shows you the breakdown.
Does this calculator include the start and end dates?
Yes — by default, this calculator counts both the start date and end date if they are business days (inclusive counting). If either endpoint falls on a weekend or holiday, it is simply excluded from the count. This matches common business usage for shipping deadlines, contract dates, and SLA calculations.
Does this calculator account for observed holidays?
Yes. When a US federal holiday falls on a Saturday, the observed day is the preceding Friday. When it falls on a Sunday, the observed day is the following Monday. This calculator uses observed dates, matching how US federal agencies and most businesses operate.
Can I add my own company holidays?
Yes. Use the Custom Holidays section to add any specific date — company holidays, regional holidays, or any other day off. Custom holidays are excluded from the business day count just like federal holidays. You can remove them individually at any time.
What US federal holidays are included?
The 11 US federal holidays: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday in January), Presidents' Day (3rd Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (1st Monday in September), Columbus Day (2nd Monday in October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November), and Christmas Day (December 25). When any of these fall on a weekend, the observed weekday is used.
